Vincent Van Gogh’s famous oil painting of the ‘Irises’
The Irises were painted in 1889 while Van Gogh was staying at the asylum – Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint Remy. Van Gogh called this masterpiece “the lightning conductor for my illness” as he felt that he could continuely create oil paintings to keep himself from going insane.
Irises was later sold in 1990 to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, where it currently resides. In 2012, the Irises is currently tenth of most expensive paintings ever sold.
